Poem for the Right to Fall
She came to me from darkness,
hidden in the pines.
A crony-crone of tall-tales-past.
And told me I should fall.
She said that is our tragic plight -
not to fall
not to fail
not to grow
not to learn
and never, then,
to know.
But what'll happen, Crony
if I fall and fail and crumble,
and stall
And everybody bans me
and old friends avert my eyes
and managers don't see me
and I never get a prize?
That can happen, yes, she says.
That should happen, yes, she says.
But try telling this to a little black bird,
or a cloud or a star in the sky!
(They'll laugh and then they''ll cry,
and laugh again
and fly).
